Following on from our student-led documentary A Nursery Beneath the Waves, one of our students, Rocco Stallard, made an exciting discovery on Camp Beach over the weekend. He found a giant mermaid’s purse measuring over 30 cm in length—an extraordinary find that immediately sparked curiosity and investigation in the classroom.
Using resources from the Marine Institute, specifically the “Explorers Fintastic Shark” programme, the class worked together to identify the egg case. Their research revealed that it belongs to the rare White Skate.
This remarkable discovery provides real-world evidence supporting the students’ project, highlighting the presence of this endangered species in the Tralee Bay area. It is a fantastic example of how curiosity, teamwork and hands-on learning can contribute to meaningful environmental awareness and conservation.
